{"id":165,"date":"2018-09-17T04:00:21","date_gmt":"2018-09-17T11:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bio-ethiks.com\/?p=165"},"modified":"2018-09-16T22:13:52","modified_gmt":"2018-09-17T05:13:52","slug":"conflict-of-interest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bio-ethiks.com\/index.php\/2018\/09\/17\/conflict-of-interest\/","title":{"rendered":"CONFLICT OF INTEREST"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Funding for research should come from a disinterested party.\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t the reality we live in.\u00a0 Most funding comes from large corporations who want validation for their existing products or expect a new product to be the result of the research.\u00a0 Funding thus creates an inherent bias that is the antithesis of scientific research.\u00a0 The reality of such funding has created new terminology within the field such as &#8220;corporate research&#8221; but the media has not adopted it.\u00a0 The media gives the public heavily biased information that has the integrity of science glossed over it.\u00a0 And dangerously, that conflict of interest bias is creeping into peer reviewed journals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent CBS report stated:\u00a0<br\/>&#8220;One of the world\u2019s top breast cancer doctors failed to disclose millions of dollars in payments from drug and health care companies in recent years, omitting his financial ties from dozens of research articles in prestigious publications like The New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet.&#8221; (1)\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, conflict of interest resulted misconduct such as:\u00a0 <br\/>&#8220;At a conference this year and before analysts in 2017, he put a positive spin on the results of two Roche-sponsored clinical trials that many others considered disappointments, without disclosing his relationship to the company. Since 2014, he has received more than $3 million from Roche in consulting fees and for his stake in a company it acquired.&#8221; (2)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>STRICTER CONFLICT REGULATIONS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While such corporate sponsorship has undoubtedly produced results beneficial to the public good, such a relationship puts a serious strain on the integrity of academic research.\u00a0 The academy needs to enforce stricter rules mandating full disclosure of conflict of interest, including amounts individuals and organizations are paid.\u00a0 And perhaps a limit on how much a corporation can pay to influence research.\u00a0 One suggestion is the creation of a general corporate tax.\u00a0 The money would go into a pool fund for research that is then distributed by the government.\u00a0 This solution would raise its own problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all paid research produces untrustworthy results.\u00a0 But the general public has a right to question whether these medicines and protocols are in our best interest.\u00a0 Is research just producing the best financial results for big corporations?\u00a0 Has a more efficient, less profitable solution been deliberately overlooked?\u00a0 One has to suspect it may be if the researcher is being paid millions of dollars for his results.\u00a0 Ergo, we need full disclosure.\u00a0 Our lives may depend on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(1)(2)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/09\/08\/health\/jose-baselga-cancer-memorial-sloan-kettering.html\">CBS News report<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Funding for research should come from a disinterested party.\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t the reality we live in.\u00a0 Most funding comes from large corporations who want validation for their existing products or expect a new product to be the result of the research.\u00a0 Funding thus creates an inherent bias that is the antithesis of scientific research.\u00a0 The&hellip;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"more-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bio-ethiks.com\/index.php\/2018\/09\/17\/conflict-of-interest\/\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":167,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"spay_email":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_is_tweetstorm":false},"categories":[4],"tags":[29,33],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v17.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>CONFLICT OF INTEREST &mdash;
