{"id":198,"date":"2018-12-17T06:00:04","date_gmt":"2018-12-17T14:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bio-ethiks.com\/?p=198"},"modified":"2018-12-16T17:14:16","modified_gmt":"2018-12-17T01:14:16","slug":"opioids-are-medicine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bio-ethiks.com\/index.php\/2018\/12\/17\/opioids-are-medicine\/","title":{"rendered":"Opioids Are MEDICINE"},"content":{"rendered":"The media headlines scream that there is an opioid crisis.\u00a0 But is it true?\u00a0 Why are doctors cutting the only pain management thousands of people have?\u00a0 It is not to improve their quality of life.\r\n\r\nWhile there is a legitimate concern that chronic pain sufferers can develop a tolerance, how the hell does cutting off all hope and leaving people in so much pain they choose to kill themselves qualify as improving their quality of life?\u00a0 What is really going on?\r\n\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\nMany opioid medication patents have expired.\u00a0 Thus, manufacturers lack financial incentive.\u00a0 The latest drugs being produced under exclusive patents do nothing for alleviating excruciating pain.\u00a0 Yet, doctors are being told they will be fired if they prescribe medication that patients have found to be effective.\u00a0 Not only do patients no longer have a voice in their medical care, doctors are losing their voice in how they treat patients as well.\r\n\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\r\n<h3 id=\"mce_8\">No stability, increased anxiety<\/h3>\r\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\nIn addition to cutting off effective medication, new laws are requiring a monthly prescription for chronic pain sufferers.\u00a0 A chronic pain condition from injury or migraines doesn&#8217;t change much.\u00a0 Most people saw their doctor once every 6 months.\u00a0 Some saw a doctor once a year.\u00a0 The doctors prevented abuse by only prescribing a month&#8217;s worth of medication, but giving 6 to 12 refills, so the patient had a regular, reliable pain management program.\r\n\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\nThis stability allowed chronic pain sufferers to manage their activity, allowing them to reduce their pain to a tolerable level.\u00a0 People could live their lives without fear of being in so much pain the only way to end it would be&#8230; to end it.\u00a0 Chronic pain sufferers could keep a month ahead of their prescriptions so they had the assurance that reducing pain would be possible.\u00a0\u00a0Now patients with lifelong, stable, chronic problems have to see a doctor every single month.\r\n\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\nMany patients do not have the means to get to a doctor.\u00a0 They do not drive, public transportation is a draining and traumatic experience, and it takes all day sitting in a doctor&#8217;s office waiting to be seen.\u00a0 This also increases the doctor&#8217;s load and reduces a doctor&#8217;s ability to treat more patients.\u00a0 Many people will simply not get any treatment at all now because doctors just don&#8217;t have time to see them.\r\n\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\nAnd if by some miracle pain sufferers get a monthly prescription, the frightening reality is that pharmacies are no longer reliable sources for filling those prescriptions.\u00a0The medicine may or may not be there.\u00a0 Pharmacies are being chronically shorted by their suppliers, and there is nothing the pharmacy can do to help the patients.\u00a0 Instead of having a month&#8217;s supply of pain medication in the cupboard, it is now a Russian-roulette game with having to wait sometimes two or three months before a prescription can be filled.\u00a0 And that sends anxiety levels through the roof.\u00a0 \u00a0Anxiety increases pain, and chronic pain sufferers become trapped in a vicious, life draining cycle.\r\n<h3>Media Drama<\/h3>\r\nAll forms of opioid abuse are currently being treated criminally.\u00a0 It&#8217;s splashy and dramatic to portray all opioid users as violent, destructive dregs of society.\u00a0 Drugs like heroin can indeed lead down that path.\r\n\r\nBut the majority of opioid users bathe regularly, get up early to go to work, work hard,\u00a0 and then go home to family and friends who love them and depend on them.\u00a0 They are normal in every way, except they have a severe pain condition that requires ongoing treatment.\r\n\r\nOne study found that people with chronic pain generally underdose themselves by as much as 80%, rarely taking medicine even when their pain levels would send most people to the hospital.\u00a0 They regularly choose to ride the pain out because chronic pain sufferers typically do not want to develop a tolerance and so they moderate themselves.\r\n\r\nThe majority of chronic pain sufferers develop a lifestyle of limited use that enable them to function effectively and seamlessly with other portions of society. The media is largely silent on this type of legitimate use of opioids as a long term treatment solution.\r\n\r\nVery few people who are life time users are &#8220;addicts&#8221;.\u00a0 They are patients.\u00a0 Yes, the addiction problem needs to be addressed, particularly for recreational drugs.\u00a0 But cutting functional, productive people off their pain treatment programs after years of successful life management and condemning them to unending pain where suicide is the only way to end their suffering is cruel, vicious, and stupid.\r\n\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\r\n<h3>Solutions Unlikely<\/h3>\r\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"align\":\"left\"} -->\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We need a health care system whose foundation is patient wellness and quality of life.\u00a0 Drug manufacturers have a clear conflict of interest. In an ideal world, they would have no political influence.\u00a0 Yet, doctors are being told they will be fired for helping people manage chronic pain by prescribing medicine that is out of patent.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We need patients to have a voice in their own care.\u00a0 We need doctors to have a voice.\u00a0 The final decision in pain management should be between the doctor and the patient.\u00a0 Yes, patients need to be monitored for opioid tolerance.\u00a0 But only because increased tolerance reduces pain reduction.\u00a0 Monitoring needs to be in the\u00a0<em><strong>patient&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>best interest.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\nPermanent opioid use under improper medical supervision has risks for creating real problems, but it sure beats the hell out of the only solution to ending the pain is to end it all.\u00a0 Suicide is not an effective quality of life option, and chronic pain sufferers are getting damn angry at being forced into it.\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8212;o0o&#8212;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h4><em>Additional Reading:<\/em><\/h4>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:list {\"ordered\":true} -->\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li><a style=\"color: blue;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/as-opioids-become-taboo-doctors-taper-down-or-abandon-pain-patients-driving-many-to-suicide?fbclid=IwAR0EdfLwifgdxJvGHBjJfZjlEKxeTh2ugz_B_FUF8xQiKVykD4lSPMU1YIE\">&#8220;As doctors taper or end opioid prescriptions, many patients driven to despair, suicide&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\r\n \t<li><a style=\"color: blue;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medscape.com\/viewarticle\/855285\">&#8220;Opioid Abuse and the Media: Attitude Adjustment Required&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\r\n \t<li><a style=\"color: blue;\" href=\"http:\/\/susan.sered.name\/blog\/addiction-treatment-news-massachusetts-round\/\">&#8220;The Opioid Epidemic?
